This morning, bright and early at 4:16 am, China Airline Flight # CI 0052 landed at Taoyuan International Airport, bringing Taiwan it's newest international sensation to tour the island. A group of Maori from the Auckland University of Technology, towing their traditional performance gear, and guitar, navigated through throngs of Taiwanese college students to attend a welcome ceremony at Chaoyang University of Technology in Wufeng District, Taichung.

The oar representing the return of the oceangoing Maori back to the island Beyond Hawaiki, an island of their origin… Taiwan.

"I was deeply moved by the experience," said Tony Coolidge, the founder of the Tap Root Cultural Exchange Program. "If there weren't so many people in the room, I would have let my tears come out."
Gifts were exchanged and the Maori students were assigned student translators, who became quick friends.

A walk around the beautiful hillside campus revealed a European architecture, and many curious students. The group attracted a lot of attention wherever they went. They completed an orientation session at the offices of the School of Communication Arts.

They spent the rest of the afternoon in the offices of the School of Communication Arts and enjoyed the eclectic art deco decor. Tony gave a talk and a presentation about the Tap Root Cultural Exchange Program, and explained what he hoped to accomplish by inviting the group from AUT to Taiwan. It opens a world of possibilities for Taiwan, by expanding the possibilities of film and television cooperation in the future. It is cooperation not just driven by opportunity, but by a connection of cultural identity.
